It’s no wonder – he’s not only a stellar hitter, he’s also a stellar defender. In 2022, he had a stellar month of July, hitting 4-for-7 with 30 RBIs and a slugging percentage of nearly 5 percent (.492), earning him the KBO League’s monthly MVP award. He was one of the players who helped KIA overcome the competition in fall baseball.

This season, however, the picture was different, as his sharp bat dulled and he began to spend more time on the bench. The rise of outfield rival Ko Jong-wook and Lee Woo-sung also narrowed Lee’s space. The decrease in playing time was also reflected in his performance. After getting just five at-bats in nine games in July, Lee went 0-for-7 in five games in August. He didn’t draw a single walk and struck out three times.

Kia Tigers and Kiwoom Heroes played at Kia Champions Field in Gwangju on Saturday. Lee Chang-jin, who was named to the starting lineup for the first time in a long time as the No. 7 hitter and left fielder, didn’t hold back. In his first at-bat of the second inning, with his team up 1-0, he singled to left-center field and stole second base on the first pitch of his next at-bat. With runners in scoring position, KIA was able to capitalize on a double by Kim Tae-gun and an error to score three runs and take an early lead. In his second at-bat in the bottom of the third inning, Lee Chang-jin drew a two-out walk and then stole second base on a wild pitch to come home on Kim Tae-gun’s single.

The defense also shined. In the top of the third inning, Kim Dong-heon, the leadoff hitter for Kiwoom, made a diving catch on a fly ball to left-center field to take the pressure off starter Lee Yi-ri. In the top of the fourth inning, with runners on first and second, Lee Won-seok chased a ball hit toward the left field fence and made a diving catch on the walking track to prevent a run from scoring.

KIA scored in all but one of its eight at-bats on the day, in the bottom of the sixth inning, to take an early lead. 11-3 victory. After suffering a 6-9 loss in Kiwoom on the 15th, KIA snapped a two-game losing streak with the win. It was a night to remember for Lee Chang-jin, who battled through a rough patch in the offense.
