‘I see MVP in him’ Betts explodes for .615 batting average ‘NL Player of the Week’

Mookie Betts, 31, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who is on pace to win his second Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, has been named the National League’s player of the week.

Betts previously won the honor three times in the American League and was named the National League’s hottest player in 2022.

In six games over the past week, Betts batted .615 with one home run, seven doubles, nine RBIs, 16 runs scored, a .655 slugging percentage and a 1.540 OPS. He had four doubles.

While he had relatively few extra-base hits, he showed off a sophisticated enough bat to hit over six home runs. He had multi-hit games in five of his six games.

Most notably, Betts pounded out five hits against the Cleveland Cavaliers on April 24, and then had seven hits in a three-game series against hometown team Boston from April 26-28.

Through 28 games, Betts was batting .315 with 35 home runs, 93 RBIs, 110 runs scored, 152 hits, a .407 slugging percentage and a 1.018 OPS in 123 games this season. Tied for the most home runs in a single season.

Betts’ 1.018 OPS led the National League. As a result, Betts recently jumped from fourth in the National League MVP voting to first.

If he keeps up this momentum, he could win his second MVP award after winning in 2018. He will also join the list of MVP winners in both leagues.
